Tue, 22 Apr 2014 11:06:03 GMT
The 2014 Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon

We heartily congratulate Claudio Cellie, one of our Year 8 students on his recent victory in the annual Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon competition held in March 2014. The win represented a significant improvement in Claudio's seasonal best performance and highlighted his growing confidence in all three disciplines. Claudio was also one of the youngest competitors in the Under 16 age group, making his triumph all the more astonishing!

In his own words:-

"The race was brilliant but very tiring. It was an amazing experience to race on the same track as Olympic medalists, Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee amongst others, as well as a number of Ironman Champions. It was kind of humbling but made me feel really proud at the same time.
Before the start of the race I was really nervous, like everyone else, because I had been training and working so hard for this one race.

The swim section was 300 metres in the ocean – which is never as easy as swimming in a pool. I felt really good and strong from the outset and pushed on to get out of the water in fourth position. This gave me to confidence to really 'go for it' during the bike phase and by the end of this part of the race, I was in first position. To make it even better, I had managed to arrive at the run with almost a full minute's advantage. The run was 2.5Km and despite the temperature starting to get really high, I was able to keep a steady speed, even adding to my advantage over the second placed athlete.

The finish was quite simply the BEST! People were cheering like crazy – especially my parents. I found it all really emotional because although I wanted to do well, I just didn't expect 1st place. It was a great experience and fun to be interviewed by professional reporters in front of TV cameras.

My final time of 35minutes 44 seconds is now the Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon record!

Ofcourse I have to say that none of this would have happened without the belief and support of my coach, Trace Rogers and my wonderful family."

This is a great statement from Claudio. We are really proud of him and this achievement!
A Night of Dance Fri, 18 Apr 2014 14:32:03 GMT Eco Update Tue, 08 Apr 2014 10:37:52 GMT
Eco Day

Our first-ever Eco Day was a great success. The day came at the end of Science Week which had 'Our School Environment' as its theme this year and included Eco projects such as making bird feeders, hanging baskets and a green house from plastic bottles! Students wore green clothes in support of the day and enjoyed the experience of our very own 'Earth Hour' when we turned off our electricity for 1 hour. Students were also encouraged to bring 'Sustainable Lunch Boxes' to minimise waste. The Recycled Toy Sale was very popular and raised a total of 1700 AED. Details of the amount raised by the Non Uniform day and the Y4 Cookie and Bookmark sale in aid of the Rainforest Foundation will follow after the holiday. Meanwhile, many thanks to everyone for their support. (Some photos Eco Day and the Eco projects can be found on Communicator under Gallery – Eco School).

Recycling Our new recycling cage is now full and ready to be emptied and the contents recycled.

T-shirt Competition Many of our students have been taking part in a competition organised by D-Grade to design an Eco t-shirt. Copies of the entries by finalists from our school have now been posted on the company's website – so please vote for your favourite designs:

Many thanks to everyone for their Eco support.

Mme Valerie – Eco Coordinator
Eco Day Reminder Mon, 31 Mar 2014 11:41:30 GMT
Please remember that Eco Day in Thursday 3rd April 2014. The effort the staff and students put into making colourful displays, team chants and banners was first class and it helped create a great atmosphere.

The spirit in which the students conducted themselves and supported each other throughout the week was exceptional. As always, they were a credit to both themselves and the school.

There were a host of highlights and examples of outstanding sporting performance. It was excellent to see so many students enjoying sporting competition the way it is supposed to be. We celebrated individual and team victories, success in achieving 'personal best' performances and there was plenty of evidence in respect of exceptional sportsmanlike behaviour. It was a pleasure to witness how spontaneously youngsters congratulated each and every competitor on their return to the 'Team Gazebo' after their events.

There were also many enjoyable fun moments such as the parents and staff races, which really helped motivate the students to perform well.

The Foundation students started the week off with a new rotational format allowing the students to showcase what they had been learning in lessons followed by some friendly competition in the obstacle and running races. The Michael Henry Trophy was presented to the Green Team by our Principle Mr Dave. It was a fitting end to a great first day.

Day two and three saw a competitive sporting display from years 1 - 6 with all students and staff creating a fabulous atmosphere. Event 1 saw the Year 1 and 2 Green Team take the lead in the quest for the Wilson Trophy. This was followed up in Event 2 with the Years 3 and 4 Green Team holding onto the lead. Event 3 produced a tight finish with the year 5 and 6 teams putting in a strong performance, particularly the 6 lap relay.

After the 3 Primary Sports Days all 4 teams joined together in the Sports Hall for the medal ceremony and the Team Presentation of trophies. Some students did particularly well picking up several medals for their efforts. All the students and parents showed their appreciation to the competitors and winners. The tension built towards the handing over of the final trophies.

The Red Team collected the Fair Play Trophy (voted for by all team managers) for the spirit in which they performed and supported each other as well as the colourful displays, banners, flags and head garments made for the week.

All 4 teams finished closely with less than 100 points splitting them all. Eventually it came down to 2 teams with less than 20 points between them the Greens and the Blues. In a dramatic comeback the Blue Team were crowned the 2014 Primary Sports Day Champions.

The Secondary students had a tough act to follow but did not disappoint. The format was designed as a Pentathlon (5 events done by each athlete with at least one jump, one throw and one run) leading up to a team and individual score. There were a number of competitive events throughout the day but a particular highlight was the High Jump final between Varun Raman, Josh Smith and Tawfeeq Samodien. They congratulated each other throughout the competition and the crowd created a tense atmosphere with everyone willing them over on every jump. Varun performed well after a difficult start and bowed out at 1.42m. Josh and Tawfeeq went head to head for several rounds but the final result saw Josh just beating Tawfeeq to set a new school record of 1m 48cm.

It was a fantastic day and again it was great to see the pupils supporting each other, their teams and showing that they really do understand the meaning of 'Good Sportsmanship'. It was a close finish for the team Trophy but the Red Rutherford's Rhino's Team just managed to squeeze out in front to take home the PSFA Shield.

One final special mention must be made to all of the Sports Leaders and our current Year 6 pupils who helped out at all the Sports Days. The manner in which they conducted themselves and the effort they put in was first class. There were some real highlights and students who really shone showing their potential as Star Sports Leaders of the future. We really couldn't have done without their unfailing energy and assistance.

Roll on next year!
Eco Schools Micro Project Update Mon, 03 Mar 2014 03:45:16 GMT
We have successfully completed the indoor part of our project and the children are all very pleased with our new 'Kitchen Garden'.
A HUGE thank you to Star Club for taking the original idea and turning it into something amazing! Their time and financial contribution is very much appreciated.

The next step is our outdoor 'sensory garden'. This garden will have plants that have a great fragrance, texture and colour and hopefully there will be some plants that attract butterflies.

To help complete this phase we need the following:

* A Project Manager and/or ideas people * Paint * Tyres * Wooden pallets * Wooden cables (all sizes)

If you can help source any of these materials we would be very, very grateful! Please see Jodie Williams or Jodi Eede at Reception or email me if you can help in any way.
International Day 2014 Sun, 09 Feb 2014 11:18:35 GMT
This special event, which will be held on 27th February 2014, is a time for us all to come together to share a little of our own cultural backgrounds with other members of the community, as well as giving us all an opportunity to learn lots of exciting and interesting things about life around the globe.

Each country represented would set up a table / stall as their display area. These stalls may offer a glimpse of the traditional costumes, customs, cuisines, music and artifacts. There will also be a small stage area that will be available as a platform to perform dancing, singing, or any other cultural activity. The children will receive a Passport, which they can then use to collect passport stamps from the various countries (stalls) they visit.

Please see Jodie in Main Reception to register your interest.
Edexcel Accreditation Thu, 06 Feb 2014 05:09:18 GMT
We are pleased to announce that Star Secondary Department had just received accreditation from Edexcel as a recognised Examination Centre to conduct International GCSE, GCSE, GCE, International Primary Curriculum and International Lower Secondary Curriculum examinations with Pearson.
School is open on Thursday 6/2/14 Wed, 05 Feb 2014 04:47:30 GMT
This is to confirm that as of now, the school will be open on Thursday 6th February 2014 until further notice from the KHDA or Ministry of Education.
