We had our first swimming gala on Thursday 16th May 2013 and our Years 7 & 8 Team won against Kings. Well done and congratulations to everyone who took part!

'AL FRESCO' SHAKESPEARE

Another successful Star Production as the Key Stage 3 students and Dance Club members take to the outdoor stage to perform
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' adapted from the play written by William Shakespeare.

When we set out with the idea of an 'alfresco' Shakespeare play, it seemed a long way off! To the year 7 & 8 students, I am sure that it was completely daunting, especially as the younger year group had never actually studied William Shakespeare.

Two things have happened since that first vision. Firstly, the academic year has simply flown by with each and every week packed full of wonderful learning experiences for our pupils. Secondly, our cast of performers has not only risen to the challenge, but have surpassed all our expectations.

Miss Shireen, Mrs Amy & myself are already proud of their considerable individual achievements.

In addition, we have admired the way in which they have helped, supported and encouraged each other culminating in a 'Cast of Confidence'. We know that every person - whether they are a main character or have a smaller role - will absolutely give their best this evening.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone (and apologise too!) for their continued flexibility as latterly, rehearsals have been modified and changed, sometimes at the last minute.

In the last days prior to most creative productions, there are hitches & glitches. That has certainly been the case this time, not least when the performance dates had to be changed. Parents have dealt with the changes to rehearsal schedules admirable and we thank you for that. We hope that you share our feeling that it has all been worthwhile.

The list of acknowledgements is comprehensive but I would like to add more personal comments.

To the two Jodi(e)s for their help in script production and logistics of the event.

To Amy & Shireen who have been great to work so closely with
and finally to the PE Department who have been encouraging & supportive throughout, particularly my husband, who has had to deal with my ups and downs both professionally & personally.

We have survived!

Thank you for coming to the shows and we hope that you enjoyed the performance of our wonderful, talented students.

Justin Bieber visits SIS!

'Justin Bieber' found time to pop into SIS during his visit to Dubai this week! 'Justin' came along to a number of French lessons and had a chat with the children in French. The children were delighted to see him and enjoyed having a conversation with him!

Please be aware that every Thursday morning between 7.25am and 7.55am, the Year 5/6 Rounders Squad will be training in preparation for their league fixtures. Be very cautious when entering the school grounds and do not allow your child to walk onto the school field. Thank you for your cooperation, we are sure you will agree that this early morning training session demonstrates the commitment to learning from our pupils.

TAKING THE PLUNGE!

In efforts to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer Research; Mr Andrew, Mrs Tracy, Miss Dawn and Mr Ian will be doing a skydive on 3rd of May.
We would gratefully welcome donations so that these well grounded people can raise as much as they can for such a worthy cause.

Venue: The Primary Reception and the corridors in front of the Multi-purpose Hall.

The programme:

An exhibition will contain the following display, activities & workshops:

Arabic Handwriting exhibition: Display for different Arabic Calligraphy, students' work, and workshop for students and parents (time TBC).
A corner shows the Arabic countries, flags, heritage, famous landmarks,…etc
Display for samples of Arabic food & its ingredients (with translation & transliteration for each meal contents)
Different competitions and games. The topics are: In the Restaurant, Circus, Vegetable & Fruit market, The Treasure Island, My school bag, & about sports.
Invention 1001: Display about famous Arab & Muslim Inventors.
Presentation: English words from Arabic Origin.
The cultural corner: Display for UAE culture & Storyteller telling story in Arabic.
There will be an Arabic Hospitality near the entrance (Coffee & Dates).

Wednesday 5^th of June will be An Arabic Assembly for Key stage 2:

An Arabic Drama (participants: Arab students).
Arabic Fashion Show
Arabic wedding
Arabic play (non -Arab students)

Fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer

Many of you will know Mrs Lynne, a former teacher in our school, who left in March 2012. Some of you will also be aware that Mrs Lynne came back to Dubai for a short visit during the Christmas holidays. Having lived in Dubai for over 20 years, Mrs Lynne had a large number of friends to catch up with. We are lucky enough to be included amongst that list and were delighted that she was able to visit the school.

It was during that visit that Mrs Lynne informed us of her desire to setup a fund raising link to support Pancreatic Cancer research. Also, Safa park run is a regular run on a Saturday evening organised by Dubai Road Runners. It was decided to start the awareness and fund raising by setting up the run on Saturday 29 December as a purple run. Over 100 runners turned up, wearing lots of purple and purple ribbons, and they raised 5,355 Dh in the collection boxes. An excellent start.

A friend who always organises the teams for the run has set up a website, where friends and supporters can chart the progress of the fund and contribute should they wish to do so.
