Primary Swim League Gala Result
Despite being moved into a very difficult league this season, our primary school swimmers did us proud yet again. There were some excellent 'personal best' times from the majority of our swimmers and everyone pulled together really well as a team.
JESS won the vent convincingly with our 'sister' school Horizon coming second, Wellington International third and STAR an amazing fourth place.
Well done to everyone who participated.
Thanks to all parent support - which can prove invaluable when things get close - and a special thank you to Darren (our new coach from Hamilton Aquatics), Mme Martha and Katie Hilson.
We are ready for the next one!

Update regarding Foundation Stage Provision
You may be aware of recent announcements from the KHDA regarding the minimum ages for children in Foundation Stage and the provision of education for three year olds.
This has obviously caused concern amongst some parents.
Following discussions with the KHDA I am delighted to inform you that we have been given approval to continue to provide for this age group (our Foundation 1).
This decision has been based on our performance in the DSIB Inspections and their confidence in the quality of our provision. For guidance relating to age groups please see further information under the GENERAL resources section.
I hope this clarifies any concerns you may have had.

Dubai Schools Swim/Run Series 2013-14
This year Star International KS3 students competed in their first Swim/Run Series Event at EIS Meadows. Each event involves a swim in the pool and then an endurance run around The Lakes with each age group varying in distances.
Our team consisted of 13 students of 6 boys and 7 girls from Years 7 to 9. The series consisted of 3 events during the year with all points being accumulated for a final winner.
When we arrived for the first event the students were slightly overwhelmed by the sight of so many pupils from a variety of schools, especially the KS4 and Sixth form competitors. It was a huge step for them and for our school development to be competing in such an event. We could see on their faces and in their body language that they were nervous, but also excited to show what they could do. The results we achieved were beyond all expectations.
Series one finished with all 6 of our boys, Csonger Cellie, Claudio Cellie, Huw Hillson, Morgan Bevan, Rupert Corlett and Greg Corlett, in the top 15 of their age group. Each performed to an outstanding level, giving them a huge boost of confidence in their ability along with a great feeling of satisfaction on their individual achievements. Another stand out performance was Ella King who had to compete in the older age group category. This entailed swimming and running longer distances, made more difficult as she was the sole Star competitor in that category.
In the second event we learned from the experiences and successes of the first event. Cailyn McMahon, Lili Copping and Julie Baudelet had joined Melissa Da Silva, Ella King, Naya Bokelman and Rachel Fallas in the already strong girls' team, to add support in the race for the title. The boys also performed excellently however due to technical faults some of the times given were incorrect meaning the true positions of the participants was unknown.
The final event was the biggest and best yet. We knew we had a chance of winning some silverware and, we did just that! 5 of our 6 boys finished in the top 10 places with all of our girls finishing in the top 20. The main success was Csonger Cellie who dazzled the crowd to win the very tight final race, which also gave him just enough points to take the title as overall winner of the age category and become Champion of the Swim/Run Series U14 Boys category. Congratulations Csonger.
Now the series has ended, the students can look back at a tremendously successful year and one to try to improve on next year. Well done to the KS3 Swim/Run Team of 2013/14.

Another Success for STAR, students!
The 2014 Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon
We heartily congratulate Claudio Cellie, one of our Year 8 students on his recent victory in the annual Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon competition held in March 2014. The win represented a significant improvement in Claudio's seasonal best performance and highlighted his growing confidence in all three disciplines. Claudio was also one of the youngest competitors in the Under 16 age group, making his triumph all the more astonishing!
In his own words:-
"The race was brilliant but very tiring. It was an amazing experience to race on the same track as Olympic medalists, Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee amongst others, as well as a number of Ironman Champions. It was kind of humbling but made me feel really proud at the same time.
Before the start of the race I was really nervous, like everyone else, because I had been training and working so hard for this one race.
The swim section was 300 metres in the ocean – which is never as easy as swimming in a pool. I felt really good and strong from the outset and pushed on to get out of the water in fourth position. This gave me to confidence to really 'go for it' during the bike phase and by the end of this part of the race, I was in first position. To make it even better, I had managed to arrive at the run with almost a full minute's advantage. The run was 2.5Km and despite the temperature starting to get really high, I was able to keep a steady speed, even adding to my advantage over the second placed athlete.
The finish was quite simply the BEST! People were cheering like crazy – especially my parents. I found it all really emotional because although I wanted to do well, I just didn't expect 1st place. It was a great experience and fun to be interviewed by professional reporters in front of TV cameras.
My final time of 35minutes 44 seconds is now the Abu Dhabi Junior Triathlon record!
Ofcourse I have to say that none of this would have happened without the belief and support of my coach, Trace Rogers and my wonderful family."
This is a great statement from Claudio. We are really proud of him and this achievement!

Our first-ever Eco Day was a great success. The day came at the end of Science Week which had 'Our School Environment' as its theme this year and included Eco projects such as making bird feeders, hanging baskets and a green house from plastic bottles! Students wore green clothes in support of the day and enjoyed the experience of our very own 'Earth Hour' when we turned off our electricity for 1 hour. Students were also encouraged to bring 'Sustainable Lunch Boxes' to minimise waste. The Recycled Toy Sale was very popular and raised a total of 1700 AED. Details of the amount raised by the Non Uniform day and the Y4 Cookie and Bookmark sale in aid of the Rainforest Foundation will follow after the holiday. Meanwhile, many thanks to everyone for their support. (Some photos Eco Day and the Eco projects can be found on Communicator under Gallery – Eco School).
Recycling Our new recycling cage is now full and ready to be emptied and the contents recycled.
T-shirt Competition Many of our students have been taking part in a competition organised by D-Grade to design an Eco t-shirt. Copies of the entries by finalists from our school have now been posted on the company's website – so please vote for your favourite designs: https://www.facebook.com/dgradeclothing
Many thanks to everyone for their Eco support.
